A Tale of Two Openings

It’s been a great few months, photographically speaking.  I had work up at the Newspace Center for Photography in Portland, OR as well as work up as part of a group show in Carmel, CA at the Center for Photographic Art.  Unfortunately due to my “real life” constraints I was not able to make it to the opening at Newspace, but did get some images from the show from Nina Johnson who works there.  It looked like a terrific turnout and it was an honor to be hanging in this great gallery and in a city that is so supportive of photography as an art form.  Here are a few photos:

I was however lucky enough to attend the opening of “An Unexpected Aesthetic: The Search for New Directions” at the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel, CA.  The Monterey Peninsula has a special place in my heart not only because I have great friends in the area but because it is such a historically important place in photography.  Many luminaries, both historical and contemporary have roots in this area and as a photographer who works in the “West Coast” Tradition, this is ground zero for that sect of fine art photography.
I was lucky enough to stay with dear friends Tracy and Hunter Witherill.  Hunter, a wonderfully talented photographer (here's a link to his work), has been a source of admiration and inspiration since I started my own photographic journey.  His friendship, mentoring, and continual contribution to my own work has been paramount in helping me define my vision and translate that vision on the fine print.  Spending time in Monterey with the Witherills was absolutely fantastic.
The actual show, which opened on Saturday March 10th, was the culmination of months of work on the part of the artists, the Center, photographer/designer Jerry Takigawa, and curator Claire Lerner.  From meeting the docents, to the panel discussion, to the opening showing, it was an absolute privilege to be part of this show.  The wide variety of photographic styles and processes made for an incredibly interesting and dynamic showing.  The other artists involved all had amazing work and it was an honor to be part of the show with them.
I just want to say thank you so much to the Center, to Jerry Takigawa, the docents, Claire Lerner, the other artists involved, and those who came out to see the show and listen to the panel discussion.  As an artist I could not have asked for a better experience.
